Friday, October 4th, was Claude's Happy 75th Birthday. It was a day with only birthday on the calendar. We would fill it as Claude wished. I was very happy our timing worked out so this day could be so relaxed.
We slept in till Claude was ready to get up. I found a single sheet map in the Santa Fe Visitor's Center. One side had a map of day trips from Santa Fe. Claude was really interested in Taos but it would have been a longer drive there and back. I saw a place named Puye Cliff Dwellings about an hour away. I checked their website. We decided to take that ride and see what we could see.
These are pictures of the drive to Puye Cliff Dwellings.
We opted not to do any of the tours. We really wanted pictures and to see something we had not seen before.
These are pictures of the cliff dwellings. They lived in the cliffs but they also had homes on top of the mesa.
We visited the gift shop. I noted this clock on the wall. It is in the Navajo language. Way cool!!4I was enamored of the blooming sage brush all along the sides of the highway. It didn't seem to grow in the land away from the highway. I did not understand that. On the way back to Santa Fe, Claude helped me find the places for pictures of the blooming sage brush and the mountains.
These are other pictures of the drive back to Santa Fe. The last one is a rain shower across the valley. Stunning!
Such a delightful and peaceful afternoon.
There was an Outback Steak House in the shopping center next to our hotel. Claude wanted his birthday dinner there. I loved that their bar lines one wall of the building. That is a glass wall. It was very open in gave the room a fun feel.
Claude ordered a baked potato with his steak. The server asked what he wanted on it. This is where Claude made his mistake. He told her, "It's my birthday. Let's put everything on it!" There, she had what she needed. She got his name and we knew what would happen.
Sure enough, after our meal, the serving staff gathered around and sang Happy Birthday to my guy. He received his free dessert which we shared. It made a fun moment for his 75th birthday.
