Christmas - Part 5 (Christmas Afternoon & Evening)

We filled our Christmas Day afternoon with checking on Santa's plate of cookies and the reindeer food...
Music around the piano...
Playing with Christmas gifts...
Enjoying being together again as a family...
Papa brought Mimi out and we had a great dinner of ham and smoked beef brisket. Then we opened Mimi's presents with her before it was time to say good-bye to her so Papa could take her back to the nursing home.
The evening ended with bringing out the first puzzle. Making a puzzle has been a tradition since my childhood with Mimi and Papa. There are rules to follow so all have a good puzzle making experience, like putting the piece you try back where you got it from so we can easily all go back when we see where it might fit. And, of course, the all important don't hold onto a piece so you can put the last piece in. We enjoy good chocolate and snack food and lots of friendly conversation while puzzle making.

Christmas - Post 4 of Several (Christmas Morning)

Our tradition for all our 20 years in Maryland was to take a picture of all the Christmas participants in the home on the stairs before anyone went to the tree. One cute story was the year Claude and I had Christmas with just us and no family. I took a picture of the empty stairs and share it with all not there. Point made!! We tried this year to get the kids and grandmonsters in the picture. Nissa got there as Bailey melted down so I'm posting 2 pictures, one without Nissa and one with Nissa.
Then everyone was entered the living room and found a spot for themselves so the festivities could begin. Stockings first...
Traditionally I always handed out the gifts from under the tree. Claude, traditionally took what our family fondly calls 'the butt shot' of mom rummaging under the tree. Thankfully there was no butt shot taken the couple of years. And I have had grandmonster helpers to hand out the gifts. Katelyn and Grampa have decreed that next year Katelyn should take my place. I must be getting older or something. I thought I was doing a great job. But we can pass along the duties to the next...well we're skipping a generation here...but, anyway, next generation. You will note that Mimi is not in the pictures here. Papa came out early and opened presents. We saved all of Mimi's gifts until he brought her out in the afternoon for her visit and dinner with us. After stockings we open gifts. Since this is my blog, I'm going to try and find pictures of things I made for Christmas gifts...
This year I had a ton of things I really wanted to make for gifts. So I determined that come heck or high-water I was going to make them. When you are retired you should be able to accomplish some of the things you couldn't always do when you were working full-time. So this was my year to do that. However, I didn't get started until the end of October and I'm still working on finishing the final one. Katelyn has in her lap her crocheted backpack purse. I made her and Aubrey each a purse. Bailey is opening her plastic canvas doll house. It has a cradle, high chair, rocking horse and 2 sock dolls inside. It closes up with a velcro clasp. When you open it a little fence and front yard space fold out. I made Katelyn one when she was little that the kids still play with. Hayden and I are sitting on his quilt made out of neckties that Claude and Michael used for work. I made Hayden and Paul each a tie-quilt. I also made Jake a quilt using his old t-shirts he had saved. I made Nissa curtains with apple appliques for her kitchen window. I also finished a plastic canvas door with ornaments you attach to it for the holidays. Mimi made the door and that was a far as she got. I found her pattern and made the ornaments. For each of the grandmonsters and for Mimi I made a calendar with pictures I had taken of each child through 2008 on each month page. I made Bonnie 2 candles with pictures of the family taken while she was here in June 2008. My last homemade gift this year is for Mimi. I used computer software and using a picture of Tiny it made a cross-stitch pattern of Tiny's face. I have just 2 colors to have it finished with waste canvas on a sweatshirt. That my friends was a lot of work but I totally enjoyed every minute of it and it was really fun to have my family open some homemade happiness this Christmas.
We finished Christmas morning with a nice breakfast of muffins, bacon and fruit cups. Papa left us to go home for a nap. Claude checked his smoker where he was making a brisket for dinner and we settled into enjoying gifts and sharing time together...next post...

Christmas - Post 3 of Several

While curled up in my cozy home on our hill in Sadieville with a chill and aches and trying to follow my good hubby's counsel to stay down and rest so I would feel better, I took my hyper-active body to my computer to work on Christmas pictures (250+++) and get them edited. Late last night I finished the project. So now I can share some of our family festivities in picture form with you. We were really blessed this year to have all kids, spouses/significant others, grandmonsters, and parental units in our home. Yes...the house was full but to me it just makes for the warmest Christmas ever. The mini-Marx's arrived Tuesday (Dec 23) afternoon while we had Gramma Bonnie at the Glitz having dinner. We were slower getting home than we thought we would be because of a wreck on I-75 due to ice on the freeway. We totally enjoyed arriving home to kids in the kitchen ready to give tons of hugs. Bonnie shared her new umbrella with the mini-Marx's and Pa showed his tremendous awe-inspiring video clips he has saved from forwarded eMails. This is a huge hit with the mini-Marx's and they often want viewings prior to bedtime. Wednesday Michael arrived and the mini-Marx's joined their parents in preparing appropriate Santa Claus and reindeer treats for the front porch. We iced cookies with Christmas stencils and counted 8 carrots for their plates. Then carefully placed a plate of cookies and drink for Santa on the little table on the front porch and the plate of carrots for reindeer on the driveway by the front porch.
Later that evening the Michigan contingent arrived. Nissa, Todd, Jake, Katelyn, Paul and Aubrey Anne. The following picture is just the chick maidens in the group exceot for Hayden of course...
With the family all tucked in bed and the parental elves putting presents under the tree and with filled stockings we were ready to try and sleep so that Santa could come and work his magic.

Christmas - Post 2 of Several

Gramma Bonnie, Claude's mom, came to spend Christmas with us. She arrived December 18th so we had about a week of 'adult swim'. Friday the 19th we let her rest. Saturday the 20th we took her to the choir practice at Church for Sunday's Christmas program. We all left very concerned but feeling a little better. Our chorister picked some really difficult music and we were struggling just a bit. After the choir practice we headed to Sadieville for the arrival of Santa in Sadieville. He comes each year by fire truck and usually greets the kids by sitting in the old train depot which is now our city hall. This year my ever so clever hubby is having the caboose refurbished that sits in downtown Sadieville. So Santa arrived by fire truck and then greeted each child in the caboose. I have already posted pictures of this with Bonnie on Santa's lap. While waiting for Santa to come, we sat in the little Baptist Church next to the depot. I played the piano for kicks and opened their hymnbook to the Christmas section. I found the nicest little Christmas song called 'Emmanuel'. Really a nice piece of music. Sunday we went to Church and to our amazement the music turned out fine. This was definitely one of those times when we gave it our best and the Lord made up the difference. We had lunch at our favorite Mexican restaurant and Papa joined us. We had a nice visit. Monday Bonnie was able to see her oldest son be sworn in as a city comissioner.
Tuesday we headed to Nonesuch, Kentucky. On the way we stopped in Lexington to purchase glass cubes with which to make Christmas decorations. Our pre-Christmas gift to Bonne was time to shop in the antique store followed by a great lunch at the Glitz in the basement. She loved looking at all the antiques for the hour before our seating was ready. We had a wonderful meal and bought the 'refresher' drink they make out of mulled cider and cranberry juice to take home for New Year's toasts.
Then Wednesday we rested until the the kids and grandmonsters started to arrive.

Christmas - Post 1 of several

Every year at Christmas it has been Claude and my tradition to put a $5 gift card in each child, spouse and grandmonster stocking. This card has always been from McDonalds. This year Claude was made a Kentucky Colonel so we did things a little different. We held with the gift card tradition but we gave everyone a Kentucky Fried Chicken gift card instead. In each envelope was a picture from "Colonel Claus". It was well received by the family!!!
