Home, Family & Gangsters!!!

Monday, September 21, 2020
This day was our second great grandmonster's birthday. Nelson Thompson turned 3 whole years old. He spent some of his day with his grandmother, our firstborn, Nissa. She did a video call and Claude and I sang Happy Birthday to Nelson. He loved it. He is such a cute little boy. Nissa took him outside into her yard and got a couple of the cutest pictures of our little man. Enjoy!! Nelson is named after my father. Nelson is his middle name. Love this little guy. It was such fun watching Nissa be a grandmother. She loves this role in her life and she is very good at it.
This day Claude installed our new microwave. I did help with some 'heavy lifting and holding it in place' while Claude put in the bolts to hold it in place. But Claude figured it out and we saved a lot of money doing it ourselves. So grateful Claude is handy and has a desire to do things for himself.
I spent my day sewing up my scraps into baby blankets. It occurred to me that I could make doll blankets for Raelyn and Emelia. I would need dolls to be sure I made them the correct size. Claude took me to Walmart and I purchased a blond haired doll for Raelyn and a brown haired doll for Emelia. These will match the girls hair color. I made two doll rag blankets for these dolls and will give the girls each a big blanket. I sent a text to Katelyn with this picture so she would know what we were doing for the girls for Christmas. I hope this helps them so we don't duplicate effort.

I got my hair cut. This was a bittersweet haircut. Tyra has cut my hair the entire time we have lived in Sadieville. Her shop is in Sadieville and I can pop over and get a haircut and then drive home and style it like I want. For 16 years, Tyra has been there. This time I wanted a cut about a week before we get our pictures taken and so I made the appointment. When I entered the shop, the shelves were empty. Tyra entered right before me and I said, "Tyra, it looks like someone is moving. Are you moving?" Then my sweet friend shared that she is looking to be out of this location within the month. She is not sure where she is going. She may even work from her home or come to our homes while she is in transition. She may even semi-retire. Ugh!! This is all having to be done because of an awful series of events in her life over which she has precious little control. My heart aches for this spirited young woman as she navigates troubled waters. I asked her to cut me a little shorter than usual because of this situation. I hope she finds the right fit for her life at this time. I'm keeping a prayer in my heart for Tyra and her sister. Sometimes, I just don't understand people and why they choose to do hurtful things. It takes so little to be kind. So very little.

This day I also finished my last quilt out of my scraps. I cut the remaining fabric into squares and probably could make one more quilt top but I don't have the backing fabric. So, I will quit with the fabric all cut into squares and in a neat bag. Here are the three biggest of the quilts. Two are rag quilts and the one in the middle is a patchwork quilt.
Here is a fun picture. Katelyn took it of Drew playing his guitar on their deck. The girls are dancing while their daddy sings and plays. Such memories. I did this when I was little as my dad played the guitar. Our kids did this while Claude played his guitar. Now Drew is doing it for their girls. This will be a fun memory for them all their lives.

Wednesday morning we did a Georgetown run. We started with getting a biscuit. Then we went to the nursing home to leave treats for Papa. I also wanted to fill his birdfeeder. When I rounded the corner of the nursing home, I stoppped short. On Papa's window sill and all over his birdfeeder were about 15 birds. I quietly tried to get my cell phone out of my pocket to take a picture for Papa of what it looks like from outside his window. Alas, one of the birds saw me and flew away which was the alarm for them all to fly away. I smiled and enjoyed the fact that so many birds frequent this place and Papa loves watching birds play. I do hope this brings him all the joy he experiences when he quietly watches animals in nature. We would do our walk and then get a salad from Panera for our big meal of the day before heading home.

I received a letter from the main office of Signature Health Care. They have nursing homes in 10 states so this was a general letter to families of residents in all of those states. They are working on plans to reopen for in-person visits in the future. No date was given as each state will have to follow guidance from their state and their particular area of the state. But it gives hope that they may allow us to have visits soon. I keep putting the thought out there that, when they do open, I would like to take Papa to sit by the creek and watch the geese. They very likely will not allow this but I am asking and telling everyone that speaks with me that this is my desire and hope for Papa. We'll see.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a monthly publication entitled the Ensign. I read this magazine cover-to-cover each month. I am always grateful for this opportunity. I always find a thought or quote that fits where I am and what I need that month. This day I read the first half of the Ensign. I found two great thoughts in there and was able to share them in my daily letter to Papa. I will give him the Ensign when I finish reading it. But I was ever so grateful for these thoughts to share with him in this day's letter. I believe the Lord knows our needs and will provide these tender mercies as we need them.

When Claude and I got home from Georgetown, we did something we never, ever do. We decided to find some movies we like and curl up in our bed and watch movies for the rest of the day!!! Yep. That is exactly what we did. It was really fun and only during a pandemic would that be possible. This is one of the things I have learned during this pandemic. It is okay to stop and take time to be together. We don't always need to fill our calendar full and think that is proof we are good. I love a day lived full and well but I really have loved having moments and times to just stop and enjoy the time together.

Today I would stay home all day long. My quilts were finished and I could persue other things. I did my ironing first and then took care of watering plants, cleaning ceiling fans and light fixtures and other little things like that.

I felt an impression that it was time to order pizza for our son. I sent Jake a text and asked him if it was time for a Cottage Inn pizza for dinner. He was very grateful for this little treat. We did some texting back and forth and Jake was actually having a little angst. The company for which he works had to lay a couple of people off. Sales are down and there is just not the income. The next step might be lowering everyone's salary so they can keep people employed. We texted back and forth about him figuring what was the minimum he could live on to stay afloat. He is happy with work right now as they are having him do more of the marketing promotion preparation. We'll keep a prayer he gets to stay on his job. I feel strongly that the long term effects of having all these cut backs in who can work will hit our economy more strongly during this winter. So ordering pizza for our son was a good thing this day. I even had them stick a cherry flavored Pepsi in his meal. He is a good son and we love him very much.

Claude had a video conference call in the afternoon so I took the opportunity to leave my laptop and go into our back yard to weed. It was apparent the weeds are not growing as much as they had been. Fall is in the air and that may be the last time I need to weed those beds this year. I still have some others I want to work on but this old body can only go so long before it gives out doing that kind of work. It was nice to get that done and give Claude all the bandwide on the WiFi for his call.

Bailey sent me this picture. I have loaned her my ukulele to learn how to play. This is her cat, Pip. Bailey simply said "I think she loves the ukulele but for the wrong reasons!!"
Katelyn took Raelyn to get new glasses. Raelyn has one eye that really pulls to the middle. The glasses help keep that eye facing the way it should. Our girl was a trooper. She is four years old so reading the eyechart was interesting. If it had colors and shapes, that would have been better. Not sure what it was but she did fine. The end result was two pair of glasses in her favorite colors. Isn't she a cutie!
Hayden knows he can let Claude and I know about any event with Star Wars and we will gladly get him a ticket and take him. Hayden found that Cinemark in Louisville was showing Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for the 40th Anniversary of that movie. I purchased tickets on-line for the three of us and for Michael, Hayden's dad. Alas, I meant to purchase for Friday and accidentally purchased for Thursday. So I got a refund for Thursday and made a purchase for Friday tickets. We were all set to go at 5pm on Friday. Thursday, I came up the hill from weeding and checked my phone. I had an eMail from Cinemark saying they were closing their theater through Friday due to civil unrest. They would refund my ticket price. I forwarded that eMail to Claude, Michael and Hayden. Hayden suggested we try another theater. Sure enough, he found a showing at Xscape Blankenbaker 16. However, they didn't show it until 7pm and I wasn't sure how that timing worked for Michael. Hayden checked and Michael called me. They also had a 3pm showing and Michael said he would see if he could get the afternoon off work and then we could go to that. Michael could. I purchased tickets for Friday at 3:30 in the afternoon. Yeah!!

The civil unrest has to do with Breonna Taylor. She was shot in her apartment in Louisville. When Black Lives Matter raised its head, this shooting became a focal point for their effort. There was a grand jury hearing. There were three police officers that went to the apartment. They had a valid warrant having to do with drugs. It was a no-knock warrant but they knocked anyway. Breonna's boyfriend fired at the officers. They fired back. Breonna was killed. Shots actually went into the neighbors apartment. The grand jury found one officer guilty from those shots. He will face trial. The other two officers were not charged. No charges were given for the shooting of Breonna because her boyfriend shot first and that started the shooting between him and the officers. It is an ugly mess and the protests are really turning into riots. Hence the closing of the movie theater. I was surprised as this theater was not in the downtown area.

Claude made the best dinner this day. He made open-faced hot turkey sandwiches with peas. He cut up fresh strawberries and served them over pistachio and whipped cream blended together. It was such a good meal. I am so happy he enjoys cooking. I believe we are having clam chowder tonight. I have started calling the kitchen 'Claude's Cafe'. Yum!!

In the morning we did a Georgetown run. Time for Claude to gather materials and mulch the plants before winter. I rode in with him. We walked, took Papa a treat, had a biscuit and went to Lowe's. While at Lowe's, Claude commented, "That's something you don't see everyday. A green skeleton." Sure enough, fall decorations were out and there sat a green skeleton. In fairness, I believe it is flourescent and will shine white in the dark. But it is interesting to find a green skeleton.
We received in our mail a package from Alzheimer's. We like to do the walk to raise fund for Alzheimer's each year. This year we sent in our money but the walk you do on your own due to the virus. Usually you get a pinwheel flower in the color that represents where you are in the Alzheimer's sphere. I usually get purple since my mother passed away from Alzheimer's. This year there are no flower pinwheels because they are too hard to mail. So they sent us two bundles with five flags in each bundle. I put one bundle in our front yard. The other bundle I would take to the Marx family and give to Bailey for her to put in their flower beds. This is a great reminder that, while Covid-19 seems to be ruling our lives right now, there are lots of other things we need to pay attention to still.
In the afternoon we left for the Star Wars movie. We pulled into the parking lot and there was one other car. A family got out and went into the theater. There were parents and four little kids. A man pulled up beside us in his truck. He asked if you had to purchase tickets on line as he couldn't figure that out. I told him we purchased ours online but wasn't sure that is how you had to do it. He pulled up in front of the theater and went inside. He and his wife would also go into the theater. Michael and Hayden arrived and the four of us went into the theater. The rows in this theater are 6 feet apart. When you purchase your tickets, the computer automatically blocks two seats on either side of the seats you choose. We had 12 people in this big theater. Great big arm chairs that lean back. It was heaven to see this favored old movie on the big screen with amazing acoustics. It was a fun experience.

We decided to pick up dinner from Zaxby's for the family and meet back at the Marx home. While pulling into Zaxby's, we saw three hot air balloons. Only one shows up in the picture. Watching hot air balloons is great fun.
Had a good little visit with Andie and Bailey and we all enjoyed a meal together. Hayden showed us his band uniform.
Then Claude and I headed back across country for home. The Mini's start in-person school Monday. Andie is already doing in-person school with 11 first graders. We're all going to be watching to see what this does to the virus numbers. Hoping it all works just fine.

I spent my day time watching the remainder of my Time Out for Women sessions. So uplifting. I was grateful for this quiet time to listen, remember and learn.

For Christmas 2019, I purchased the American Legacy Tours Newport Gangsters Walking Tour for Claude. We did the baseball walking tour with them in 2019 that was in Cincinnati and focused on the 1919 World Series fiasco which happened right in Cincinnati. We enjoyed it so much that we picked the Gangster one to do next. Then the pandemic hit and I wasn't sure they would even do them. Things are opening up and I called to secure a spot for this walking tour. We got Saturday at 5pm. I will try to give a brief pictoral telling of our walking tour. I can't guarantee all the facts are exactly accurate but they should be pretty spot on. I tried to take a few pictures with my camera and them make notes on an app I have on my phone.

The coolest things was our tour guide is the one who created this particular tour. He is actually a principal of a school in Erlanger, Kentucky. He has grown up in this area and knows it very well. When he was a teacher, he would take his students to central America for a service trip. To raise money, they came up with idea of a tour focusing on Newport, Kentucky history and particularly the gangster side of it. He was extremely well versed in the topic and provided us with a historic tour and how this has spilled over into his own life. Alas, I do not remember his name. Honestly, wearing a mask is not the best way to give a walking tour along busy streets.
We started the tour at The Syndicate in Newport. Part of this establishment in the Dueling Piano Bar. Love the Art Deco style of buildings. Felt like I was back in Miami.
In a nutshell, there was Wiedemann Brewery in Newport. It employed most of the people in the area. Prohibition came and people lost their income. The first to take advantage of this situation was the Cleveland Syndicate. I didn't even know there was a Cleveland Syndicate. But there was and it moved in with speak easy's and gambling. Newport was the first to have gambling in the open in the barber shops, store, etc. They put labels on the equipment so it looked like all was legal. It was not but it was making money where money was needed and no one complained. Las Vegas would come later and use these ideas from Newport. Who knew?? Not me! When they tried to get the gambling world under control adult entertainment came right in. All of this was before Vegas. And it was prolific in this area of Newport. The walking tour took us around maybe a four block area and we stopped in front of buildings and were told their stories.

This building was named "The Talk of the Town" back in the day. It was a stripper type show. However, to the surprise of many who entered, the strippers were men in drag.
At this intersection a man named Red Masterson killed two people. He was paid to do this by someone. It turns out the two people he killed were two of Capone's men and part of the Cleveland Syndicate. This put Red in a bad position. Red would eventually burn down, twice, the Beverly Hills and end up on top of this situation somehow. I am fuzzy on the details but Red would not be found guilty and would become a player in the area.
This establishment is called the Brass Ass. Ugh!! It too was a strip club and had names over the years of Silver Slipper, Starlight and eventually Star Dust. At this place they invented a game called Egyptian Dice or you may have heard of it as Razzle Dazzle. Don't even play this game, you will never win.
This next establishment was for Cowboys and Cowgirls. That is all I know. Nothing else but there is a BIG white horse inside. Claude stood by it for me to take the picture.
The Falcon Theater was a strip club with the associated ladies of the evening. The man who owns this has, and showed it to our guide, a collection of over 150 men's wedding bands. They were taken off and left in the establishment over the years.
There are actually three buildings of note in this picture. The first is the tan building on the left. It was a strip club. The two brick buildings to the right of it were gambling establishments. Please note how close all of these enterprises were located. There were lots of tunnels in the underground to get from one to the other without notice or to escape the law.
The parking lot behind our tour group was the location of a business named the Hippodrome. It's purpose was to view pornographic movies. Ugh, Ugh, Ugh!!
Across the street from where the Hippodrome was located is another parking lot next to a restaurant named the Pepper Pod. The parking lot had a strip club and the guests would order meals from the Pepper Pod and the Pepper Pod would deliver meals to the strip club.
The Dixie Chili actually had several locations. It had ridiculous hours to match the needs and timing of the local adult and gaming businesses. You could always get a bowl of chili there. In fact, they used to sell it in cans and, up until a few years ago, you could buy Dixie Chili in cans in Las Vegas. Yep, there was a connection there as well.
We walked down the street and around the corner and down a block and found the York Street. This was a speak easy. It still has the big letters W and B inside taken from the original Wiedemann Brewery when it had to close because of prohibition. They also took the bar out of Wiedemann Brewery and it is their bar. There is also a painting done by an artist of things that happened in this area. He actually made several of this area and the life lived in it. They sold for thousands of dollars each. The one remaining at York Street is of a mother and daugher who are prostitutes. Amazing!
Across the street for York Street is the National Band and Tag Company. They actually made sunglasses for chickens. Really. They would help the chickens lay eggs in a brightly lit chicken house. A pair of these sunglasses is still on display at York Street.
The next few pictures are of the 633 Club and the Jockey Club. The dark building is the Jockey Club and the light building and parking area were the 633 Club. This was a casino. There was a bowling alley in it. When the current owner turned it into a craft beer establishment, they used the bowling alley flooring for their tables. One picture is the top of a table showing the markings from the bowling alley lane. I thought that was kinda cool.
This building sits where the original Wiedemann Brewery was located.
The place of note here is Apartment 5 located behind the tree trunk. It was supposed to be an antique shop. A man was sent there and shot down as a hit. The crime was never solved as to who did this. The family has asked our guide to help them locate the killer. While a lot of this stuff happened in the late 1800's to the early 1940's. This particular event took place in the 1970's. Not that far back. Our guide said something about this being in a movie but I didn't quite get that.
This particular building was The Yorkshire. It was a happening place. Lots of telephone lines were along the outside until the current owner bought and remodeled it. This was because it was a place to place bets all over. It was also a club and people like Sammy Davis Junior, Frank Sinatra, etc. frequented there. Remember this was the Vegas before there was a Vegas.
One thing we learned is that a man wanted to build a big tower in Newport. The site for that tower was the parking lot across from the syndicate. Here is Claude by the Jeep with the Syndicate in the back ground. The second picture is the huge parking lot.
In this tower would have been a huge bell. They have the bell. The tower was not built. It would have been too high to have the planes from the Cincinnati Airport fly over. I did take picture of this beautiful bell.
Once again, we had a great tour. We learned a little more history of Kentucky. I marvel that so much has happened on this earth and we often just live each day and are not really aware of all that happened in the spot on which we reside. Claude and I enjoyed both our tours with American Legacy Tours. We would recommend them to anyone interested in taking one.

This morning before we did our Church service, I went on the front porch to water my mums. I took a few pictures of our front porch decorated for fall. Okay, the last picture makes me dizzy. That is because I stood over the top of the mums and took a picture from above them. But they are pretty with their buds bursting.
That ends another week of home, family and gangsters!!

More in the Journey of Sandi...

You know, sometimes it is hard to recreate a week. I look at my calendar and make notes for each day of appointments that day. With Covid-19, there aren't many appointments so that process often has little learn. I save all my text messages for a week and go through them to flesh out a bit more of what happened or what was said on any given day. Next I go to my Facebook feed and see if I posted any comments or pictures that add more to my story. I also check our family Facebook page. I can go through my received and sent eMails and peek at my telephone log. All of those things usually help me remember each day. Honestly, all days run together right now. Once I have my penciled notes about what happened each day, I can then put fingers to keyboard and make my weekly Blog entry. This is my journal so it is important to me to keep it for the time being.

This Sunday as I did all of the above I realized I had one picture for Monday and Tuesday. I know I went to bed each night grateful that I filled each day nicely. I have a chat with Heavenly Father and run through all the things I am grateful were accomplished or that happened that day. Today...I only have one item. It was for Monday, September 14th. I have one picture that I sent to our daughter, Andie, to thank her for purchasing purple potatoes for me. I LOVE purple. She saw this little bag in the grocery store and bought it for me. Purple Potatoes!! Monday, Claude roasted them with some veggies to go with our meal. I sent this picture to Andie with a thank you for thinking of her purple lovin' mother!! I will tell you they were yummy and, if you get a chance, try purple potatoes.
Now I will just share some insights and thoughts to fill in the Tuesday, September 14th as I have no real clue what happened that day.

My father is on Medicaid for his nursing home health. There are very strict rules to qualify and to keep you qualified for this coverage. Each year in August I get a letter from Community Based Services requested proof of his financial status. This is simply a copy of his most current back statement indicating he doesn't have over $2000.00 to his name. I take it to the Medicaid office in Georgetown and they scan it into his record and send that to wherever to prove that he can continue for another year to be covered by Medicaid. Then I get a letter back from them that says all is well and he is covered until September 30th of the next year. This year, no letter in August. Things are really topsy-turvy with the virus in control so I wasn't worried. Then September came and no letter. I decided, when it was half way through September, I better find out what was going on. I researched for several hours on line to see what I could do to find out. You see, we were given no phone number to call regarding Papa. With Mimi, she had a case worker and a phone number and I could call with questions. Papa has no such specific case worker and they don't give out a phone number anymore. I finally found a number and called it and lo and behold, a nice lady answered the phone. After giving her the information that verifies Papa is a Medicaid patient and I do have authority to act in his behalf, I explained not receiving the letter and the concern about not losing Papa's Medicaid. She put me on hold for a few minutes and came back to tell me that his Medicaid was extended through December 30, 2020. If I didn't receive a letter by December 1st, I should call her back. This extension was due to the virus. I told her that this virus has made so many variances in our norm. She and I laughed as she said, "Don't get me started on that virus." I imagine they are swimming in exceptions and extensions where she works. She was very nice and I was very grateful for positive help.

I read a book several years ago that I really enjoyed. I have felt the impression to read it again. It is an easy read as there is one page to read each day of the year. The title of the book is Simple Abundance and the author is Sarah Ban Breathnach. I am enjoying this book. One of the things she encourages is to get a pretty notebook (I have a small spiral notebook that is PURPLE!) and call it your Gratitude Journal. Each night I am to write 5 things I am thankful for that day. I am enjoying doing this. It is nice to reflect over my day and find 5 things for which I am grateful. It can be big things or the tiny little things that give me a smile. I am enjoying reading this again at a very leisurely pace and I am enjoying my Gratitude Journal. This is a good idea.

I have spent a good deal of time cutting out squares. I am clearing out all my scrap fabric. To do this I am making rag baby quilts. I have completed two this week. I have squares cut and ready to make two for baby dolls. I determined this would be a fun gift for Raelyn and Emelia for Christmas. Claude waited yesterday while I purchased two baby dolls for our little dears. They have blond (Raelyn) and brown (Emelia) hair. I will make a little baby doll blanket next for each of their dolls for Christmas. It is fun to make good use of all those scraps and to empty out those drawers of fabric.

I love Mello Yello. This is a citrus flavored soda. I usually keep it and Dr. Pepper in my fridge. For the last few months, Claude has not been able to find Mello Yello in cans in Walmart. We tried several other grocery stores and never found any in cans. He can get it in 2-liter bottles. But no cans. This quandry perplexed this Old Girl and she did the only way to find an answer to these types of delimmas nowadays. I Googled Mello Yello can shortage or something close to that. Turns out that the virus has caused a shortage in aluminum cans and a shortage of the sugars that go into soda. So, the soda manufacturers are only making in cans the ones that sell the most. Who can blame them, right? I was just very happy to understand that at some future date Mello Yello will again be available in cans. Until then, I am learning to use 2-liter bottles over many days and fast food drive-thrus that offer Mello Yello are my new best friends!!

Claude and I have made this comment several times over the past few months as we hunker down together, just the two of us most of the time. We really like being together!! Many couples retire and find themselves together 24/7 and find they have a hard time getting along. Claude and I have found it great fun to be just the two of us. In fact, we have had to admit that we need to watch this as we are moving away from people in general. But it sure feels good to know that we can be together, just the two of us, for many days with no physical contact with other people, and we are happy at the end of each day. Important lesson learned from the corona virus.

Wednesday, September 16, 2020 This day would require many trips to Georgtown. We try to minimize this by doing our errands together and one or the other waiting in the car while the other goes in to the store. This day would not lend itself to that at all. Claude determined he would go in to Georgetown in the morning to accomplish errands. I needed to get more socks for Papa. So we went to Georgetown in the morning and did our walk, had a biscuit, did Claude's errands and came home.

This was a good plan because I was able to sit at the breakfast table and, with black sharpie in hand, write V. Lawrence on the bottom of each of the 24 socks! My life is so riveting sometimes! Then I quickly brought up fall front porch decorations.

In the afternoon I had an appointment with Dr. Richardson, our opthalmalogist. I have some kind of shadow on both my eyes that are a precursor to glaucoma. This can be caught by controlling your eye pressure (which is different from your blood pressure). Dr. Richardson gave me a new eye drop a month before to put in my eyes in the morning. He wanted to test the pressure and see if the new drops helped. They did and now I would get a formal prescription for these drops.

Next I went to the nursing home and left off the socks and a treat bag for Papa. Then I went around and filled that bird feeder. These birds are really enjoying that food!

Our plan for the evening was for Claude to come in for his audiology appointment and us to meet after and go to Lexington to eat from Firehouse Subs. This we did and it was delicious. Love their Italian sandwich.

Claude drove me back to Georgetown where my car was waiting at the nursing home. I went to CVS to see about that prescription. The sample Dr. Richardson gave me the month previous was empty and I would need that filled for the next morning. I went into the pharmacy with a paper copy of the prescription in case there was a problem. I was told they had it and were filling that prescription. It would be ready in about 30 minutes. I told the nice lady I would wait in my car and would they call me when it was ready. She made sure she had the correct phone number and I went to my car. That was at 5:30pm. At 6:30pm I still had not heard from CVS so I went into the pharmacy to check if it was filled. It was and no one called. Ugh. I went to pay for it and the asked if I would like a flu shot. I asked her if there was a cost. No cost. I asked if they had to one for old people that has extra mojo in it. She assured me they did. She asked me if I was over 65. I chuckled and tugged at my gray hair and assured her I was 70. I told her I would be happy to have a flu shot. So I waited for the young man to come out and give me my flu shot. Yeah!!

That evening while sitting in my car waiting for the pharmacy to call, my left arm started to itch. I thought maybe there were mosquitos but I never saw any. By the time I got home I had a rash all down my arm. Ugh!

Thursday, September 17, 2020 I was in a miserable place. My itching was now behind my left ear as well as my left arm. I did not sleep hardly at all the night before simply because my body thought it was wide awake, not because of the itching. When morning came I was just miserable. Claude had a day of errands starting in Lexington. I was grateful this was one day we had not planned for me to go with him. I planned to stay home. I did stay home. And I stayed in my sewing room all day.

I purchased the online session of Time Out for Women. I would watch the first one of those. Totally enjoyed this. Time Out for Women is put on each year is larger cities by Deseret Book. The speakers are excellent. If it is held in Cincinnati, I usually go to that. This year, because of the virus, it is being offered on-line. The theme this year is Take Courage My Heart and the scripture reference is Psalm 27:14. I cut out some squares after watching this first session. Claude got home and I quit for the day. I curled up on the love seat (really this is my nest upstairs) and spent the evening with my good hubby.

While Claude was gone he went to the shooting range in Lexington. Then he went to Bed, Bath and Beyond. He has been searching for a really good egg slicer. In case you are not aware, my hubby loves to cook. He has taken over the kitchen and does all the cooking. I am very happy with this arrangement. After years of planning menus, buying groceries and cooking, I am very happy to have Claude take up this gauntlet for our little family. If the man wants a great egg slicer, I say, "Let the man have a good egg slicer!" I received this text message from my hubby as he left the gun range and went to Bed, Bath and Beyond, "Do you find it the least bit ironic that I went to the gun range to shoot and now I'm off to the store to shop for kitchenware?" I chuckled upon receipt of this message. My reply, "Nope. You a confident well-round guy. Now, off to a clothing store and buy yourself a pink shirt!!" We are a happy couple.

This night we started the Hobbit series as our movie of the evening.

Friday, September 18, 2020 The big news on the news this day is that RBG, Ruth Bader Gisburg died. She was a Supreme Court Justice. Our Andie hero worships this lady. And there is a lot to think very highly of her for. She has accomplished and fought for many things in her life time. She has had an amazing life. With this being an election year, this immediately brings on contention. I do not like contention. It doesn't get us anywhere except divided. Claude even read a piece that someones stated this will bring protests and riots from them if a new judge is selected by President Trump before the election. As if we are not already divided enough by the election and the difference of opinion between the two parties added to by the racial tension. It is just very end of days feeling to me out there.

This day Claude read in the Georgetown NewsGraphic that Toyota would have their annual Hazardous Waste type drop off on Saturday. The next day! Claude went into gear to gather the items we had collected. This is such a good thing that Toyota does for us each year. They take things that should not be disposed of in your local landfill and dispose of them in the proper way at no cost to the community. We had my old laptop, a Kindle, a printer, and...we took down our microwave!!
My thought at looking at this hole in my kitchen was that it reminded me of my last year without my front teeth. My kitchen was without its front teeth. It was an absolute comedy to watch Claude and me take the microwave out. Claude had pillows with a big cutting board on top of them over the glass stop stove. We finally got the booklet that came with the original microwave and went through the instruction backwards to get it out.

I was able to purchase another Groupon so that Claude could have another flying lesson. And, while working with Groupon, I found a date for Claude and I to walk the American Legacy Gangster tour in Newport, Kentucky. I purchased that Groupon for Claude for Christmas last year. I really thought we might just not get to do that with the virus. But they are doing tours and we are set to experience this one this month. More on that after the tour.

We watched the second Hobbit movie this night. It is titled the Desolation of Smaug. We both remembered the dragon, Smaug, was killed in this one. Not so. He doesn't die until the third one. Good thing no one gives us a test on our movie memory.

Saturday, September 19, 2020 This was a beautiful day. The temperature was forecast to maybe make it to 70 degrees. The skies were clear and it was simply beautiful. We filled out day with errands. First we took all the things we had saved to the Toyota drive through.
Next Claude waited in the car while I went into Walmart and purchased two dolls for Raelyn and Emelia for Christmas. This lets me know how big to make their doll quilts.

We followed this with a walk in the park, dropping off a treat for Papa and a biscuit and soda from Bojangles. We realized when I put the dolls in the back of the Jeep that the people at Toyota had not taken the Kindle. Back to Toyota we went to dispose of this properly.

Our next stop was at Sunset Memorial Gardens outside of Frankfort, Kentucky. I wanted to put new silk flowers on my Mother's grave. I just love this cemetery. It is in the middle of farms and has a lake. So pleasant. I asked Claude to take a picture of me with my Mother. He did. Love these quiet moments in time.
While Claude and I stood there, I heard him say, "Here's the new grave." I looked over and saw what he was referring to and we both had an old people chuckle. There was indeed a "New" grave by my parents.
When we got home I finished sewing the second baby rag quilt. I would clip all the edges while we watched the final Hobbit movie that night.

Sunday, September 20, 2020 we enjoyed Sacrament meeting via Zoom. Then Claude passed the sacrament to us. We read in our Book of Mormon and watched the Darin show about that block of scripture.

I have written our missionaries and Papa letters. I have just about completed this blog post.

In about a hour a friend is coming and she and I will watch the next Time Out for Women session together. It will be fun to have another Lady to watch this with. Her hubby is being kind enough to watch their seven children so we can do this together. Thank you Josh for that.

I has been another good week. We are at 3.8 positivity rate with the virus. This is good. Things are loosening up a bit. Walmart even took their directional stickers off their floor and opened all their doors again. People are wearing masks most of time when inside a business that we have had to enter. I keep wipes in my purse. We have eaten in a few places over the last month. I always wipe down their table before we sit down to eat. Don't care if they have just cleaned it. I will wipe it down one more time for good measure. We have been blessed with good health through this. Papa's nursing home has been blessed with no cases with residents or staff so far. Another nursing home in Georgetown has had 9 death and the bulk of their residents tested positive. So Papa's situation, while not fun, has been a huge blessing. We will get through this. And we will continue to fill our days with productive things.
