Pres. Greene invited Claude and me and several of his other friends in the community to join him for a tailgating buffet at the Georgetown College Conference Center followed by a view of the football game between Georgetown College and Alderson Broaddus University on Saturday, October 22nd. We accepted.
This is the view out of the conference center window of the football field. The President's box is at the far top end of the building on the left. We were in for a treat. It was cool enough that day to feel like it was a great football weather day. But not so cold you had to stay bundled up in coats.
During the buffet meal we were treated to a great barbershop quartet. They roamed freely around the room and sang to tables of people as they went. One of my personal favorites was them singing "My Old Kentucky Home" with "Run for the Roses" mixed in. It was a stirring medley of those two great songs. Damon Thayer brought this nice man and introduced him to us. He is the Secretary of Labor Cabinet Derrick Ramsey. Yes, he was an athlete in at the University of Kentucky. He was genuinely interested Sadieville and we share bits of our history with him.
Lunch was great. They even served Fried Green Tomatoes and a casserole version of the Kentucky Hot Brown. You can't get more Southern and Kentucky than that!
After lunch we followed all the guests to the President's box to view the game. More treats were available to those needing a munchie.
A couple of tender moments from my view of the game. First, Georgetown's mascot is a Bengal tiger. This was fun to watch the little one take to this big furry creature. Gramma was intent on getting that picture of the moment.
This picture shows player number 10, Kody Kasey. I had asked Pres. Greene during lunch conversation if there were ever any injuries. There is a lot of talk nowadays about the number of injuries kids are sustaining and if football should even be included in high school sports. Pres. Greene noted that they had a severe one last year. Kody Kasey was playing and was tackled. The bones in his right leg were shattered. They tried multiple surgeries and just could not save his leg. He was eventually fitted for a prosthesis and he started getting himself ready to play football again. He is now back playing football and the week prior he was thrown a ball and ran all the way down the field for a touchdown. Amazing.
We didn't get to stay for the entire game as we were scheduled to pick up the Mini's for the weekend after Hayden's cross country race in Lexington. We excused ourselves during the second half of the game. It was a delightful experience.
