Primary Can Be Fun...

I have taken a break from Blogging for a bit.  I'll try and do some as time permits to catch up and to keep up.

This quick Blog entry has to do with last Sunday's Primary music time during sharing time.

Primary is the auxilliary for children 18 months through 11 years of age. Our Primary has about 60 kids in it. We have Junior Primary for kids 3 years through 6 turning 7 years and Senior Primary for kids 7 years through 11 turning 12 years old. Each one of these groups meets separately and our chorister does a 20 minute singing time as a part of the sharing time for each group.  The first part of the year they spent each month diligently learning the songs they needed to sing in their sacrament meeting program. These last few months of the year Amber, our chorister, has picked a theme and worked on songs that the kids already know that follow that theme. This month the theme has been missionary work.

Last week Amber had the cutest method of involving the kids in singing.  She came to the front of the Primary room covered in dots. The red, yellow, green and blue little dots you might put on something for a yard sale. Amber had them all over her face and shirt, front and back. She told the kids she has 'musical measles'. She feigned illness and said it was very contagious. The thing the kids had to do was sing really well the song that was selected. While they sang my counselors walked each side of the Primary room and put a dot on each child that sang well. After the song was finished, Amber had the kids take their colored dot stickers and cover their teacher with them. Every now and then after a song was finished, Amber would have the teachers stand so everyone could see how covered they were getting in 'musical measles'.

It was delightful. The children really got into singing and covering their teachers with 'musical measles'. Even Jack, our little Down's Syndrome child, was caught up in collecting measles and covering himself with them. He would stand by Amber and help her lead the song and then grin so big as he placed more stickers on himself. Soon, even the pianist was being covered with sticker.  After the kids were finished with music time, Amber pulled out her cell phone and took pictures. The musical adventure was done in Junior and Senior Primary.

Senior Primary kids were missing a teacher to sit with them during sharing time. I volunteered to be their 'teacher' for singing time. It was so fun singing and being covered in stickers. Here are the pictures of me and the kids.

It is moments like this that lift your spirits and make you very happy you have the opportunity to serve with these young people. I have always believed the gospel lessons learned through the Primary songs are what stay with the kids. So happy they are singing and enjoying that learning process.
